SDH  Hedgelaying Competition 29th January 2017

By Honor Bank

A beautiful North  Dorset location in Mappowder, this is one of the smaller competitions now in its fifth year.  It is well supported with eleven entrants and run by Ivan Croad, from South Dorset Hunt, and sponsored by Hall & Woodhouse Brewery.  A very overcast and damp Sunday morning welcomed the cutters from as far afield as Devon and Westbury  in Gloucester ,  along with the more local Dorset entrants.

Two classes are held at this competition; Novice and Open.  The Novices having less distance to lay. Lots were drawn and the competition started along with the rain. The entrants were faced with a very mixed hedge consisting of Ash, Thorn, Maple and Willow. One side bordering a level field boundary the other a very steep and water filled ditch, making cutting very tricky.  Thankfully everyone's feet remained dry.

Good progress was made by all entrants during the morning and soon things started to take shape. During the short stop for lunch the rain held off but soon returned very heavily and the ditch was now flowing well.  Not put off, the hardy hedgers progressed, although with worsening weather they were pleased to be finished after the five hours allotted cutting time.  The Judges did their deliberations to pick out the top three of each class.  Father and son, Richard & Alex Clayson were very pleased with their trip down from Gloucester with Alex taking the novice title ahead of his father's third place.

The Results were as follows

1st Alex Clayson

2nd Stafford Cox

3rd Richard Clayson

1st Russell Woodham

2nd Terry Combe

3rd Tim Frampton
